Where did kid sports go?

I had a whole different vision of how this first blog would go but an event happened in my kids life that I just couldn’t hold in. I knew if I took action on this it would only hurt my son and with how things are ran today, nothing would come out of it. So instead I took to writing down my thoughts online.

What happened to teaching and educating young kids (ages 9-11) on the techniques and skills of a new sport to them – in this case tackle football. Majority have never played tackle at this point. A lot of coaches these days put winning over teaching and giving all kids a chance of experience. But lets not forget each coach (dad coaches may I add) truly believe each of their son is a NFL player in the making. Most are truly blind to what they have/are creating. I would like to also remind coaches that they are not still in high school nor are they a professional coach so please put your childish behavior aside and focus on raising and teaching these young boys the skills they need in life.

There is to entirely too much pressure put on these young athletes today. Let kids be kids. Do not take their childhood away from them just so you can continue living your adult childish life. I have a lot more I can say but what I will leave with is a note to all coaches, don’t loose the fun that is meant to be had in youth sports, life lessons and skills that these young kids need at this age. They need a role model not a middle age man screaming at them for what they have done wrong. So take a breathe and put the fun back into sports.

Evaluate yourself before stepping foot on that field before every practice and every game. Are you the coach you want to be remembered as? Did you teach these young boys anything that they can use and remember 5-10 years later. Positive feedback versus yelling at a child goes a long way and yields much better players.
